Kidney Stone, Sign & Symptoms and Risk Factors For Kidney Stone

A kidney stone, also known as a renal calculus or renal calculi is a small, hard deposits that form inside your kidneys from minerals in the urine. Kidney stones typically leave the body by passage in the urine stream, and many stones are formed and passed without causing symptoms. If stones grow to sufficient size (usually at least 3 millimeters (0.12 in)) they can cause blockage of the ureter.

Kidney stones have many causes and can affect any part of your urinary tract — from your kidneys to your bladder.

Kidney Stone Causes

Kidney stones are created when certain substances in your urine, including calcium, oxalate and uric acid, crystallize. These crystals may then join together and form a kidney stone. Risk Factors for Kidney Stones include:

✓ Family or individual history

If someone in your family has kidney stones, you're more likely to develop stones, too. And if you've already had one or more kidney stones, you're at increased risk of developing another.

✓ Age

Kidney stones are most common in adults age 40 and older, though kidney stones may occur at any age.

✓ Being a man

Men are more prone to develop kidney stones. However the incidence in women is also increasing.

✓ Low Water Intake

Not drinking enough water each day can increase your danger of kidney stones. Individuals who live in warm climates and those who sweat a lot may be at higher risk of Kidney Cancer than others.

✓ Some Foods

Consuming high-protein, refined sugars, fructose, sodium,  salt, or glucose diet may increases your risk of kidney stones.

✓ Obesity and Weight Gain

High body mass index (BMI), extensive waist size and weight gain have been linked to an increased risk of kidney stones. People with larger body sizes may excrete more calcium and uric acid, which increase the risk of kidney stone formation.

✓ Digestive diseases and surgery

Gastric bypass surgery, inflammatory bowel disease or chronic diarrhea can cause changes in the digestive process that affect your absorption of calcium and water, increasing the levels of stone-forming substances in your urine.

✓ Medication

Long-term use of medications such as antacids, aspirin, antacids, calcium and vitamin D supplements, certain antibiotics, antiretroviral drugs (used to treat HIV) may increase the risk for kidney stones.

✓ Geographical Conditions

Dietary factors, minerals in local water may contribute  kidney stones.

✓ Other medical conditions

Some Diseases like renal tubular acidosis, cystinuria, hyperparathyroidism, urinary tract infections may increase your risk of kidney stones.
